Wet Dreams Book Club Is Back! 📚

Hello, everyone!
I hope you all had a fantastic summer on the water.
I’m really looking forward to getting together again to discuss some great books. Hopefully, we can even get a few authors involved!
With that in mind, I’d like to start meeting on the first Tuesday of each month, beginning in November. It will be a great opportunity to get acquainted and reacquainted, share stories, and connect with fellow river lovers.
I’ve received several book suggestions to get us started:
A Pearl in the Storm — Tori Murden McClure
In June 1998, Tori McClure set out to row across the Atlantic Ocean by herself in a twenty-three-foot plywood boat with no motor or sail. It was a journey that affected her life in unexpected ways for years to come.
Yampa Yearnings — Eugene Buchanan
Yampa Yearnings by award-winning author Eugene Buchanan celebrates northwest Colorado’s Yampa River, the last remaining free-flowing tributary to the Colorado River Basin that retains its natural hydrograph. Through Buchanan’s 30-year relationship with his beloved Yampa River in Steamboat Springs, the book explores the river’s importance to agriculture, communities, recreation, wildlife, and water preservation. From its headwaters to its confluence with the Green River in Dinosaur National Monument, the Yampa supports a remarkable variety of life and livelihoods. Buchanan’s stories inspire readers to appreciate and protect the waterways in their own backyards.
Thirty Days Below the Rim — Jon Fuller
Thirty Days Below the Rim is Jon Fuller’s humorous and insightful account of his 30-day, 280-mile whitewater rafting journey through the Grand Canyon. Hoping to find respite from a world mired in political and social turmoil, Jon joins fourteen strangers at the Lee’s Ferry boat launch.
Follow along with his daily journal as the crew navigates the Colorado River’s thunderous rapids and peaceful pools, explores idyllic side canyons, takes in the Canyon’s breathtaking scenery, and camps under the stars on serene beaches 5,000 feet below the rim.
As the crew travels deeper into the Canyon, they face danger, conflict, and adventure together. Jon discovers that wilderness is no panacea for the world’s turmoil. Instead, he learns that the roots of society’s conflicts lie within each of us. With the river as both crucible and catalyst, he finds the thread that binds even the most different people together.
Where the Water Goes — David Owen
The Colorado River is a crucial resource for a surprisingly large part of the United States, and every gallon that flows down it is owned or claimed by someone. David Owen traces the water from the Colorado’s headwaters to its parched terminus, once a verdant wetland but now a million-acre desert. He takes readers on an adventure downriver through a labyrinth of waterways, reservoirs, power plants, farms, fracking sites, ghost towns, and RV parks to the spot near the U.S.–Mexico border where the river runs dry.
Water problems in the western United States can seem deceptively easy to solve: turn off the fountains at the Bellagio, stop selling hay to China, ban golf, cut down the almond trees, or kill all the lawyers. But a closer look reveals a vast, human-made ecosystem that is far more complex and interesting than the headlines suggest.
The story Owen tells in Where the Water Goes is crucial to our future. It explores how engineering marvels, complex legal agreements, aging infrastructure, and cooperation between neighbors enable life to flourish in the desert—and the disastrous consequences we face when any part of this delicate system fails.
There are just too many good books to choose from!
Please share your thoughts on these suggestions or recommend a book you’d like to add to the list.
And please come whether or not you’ve read the book! The club is about more than reading; it’s a chance to build connections, make new friends, and share stories. Feel free to invite anyone you’d like to join us. We’ll have light snacks and beverages.
Our first gathering will be Tuesday, November 3, at 5:00 p.m. at Wet Dreams River Supply, 739 3rd Ave., Unit B.
We can discuss which books we’d like to read, share any summer adventures, and catch up with one another.
Looking forward to seeing you all! Happy reading and happy boating!
